Patkau Architects' model for Audain Whistler Museum unveiled

Michael Audain unveiled the model of Patkau Architects design for his namesake museum this morning. Check out this video and the article in Vancouver sun.

The building is the same size as Museum of Vancouver and just over half of Vancouver Art Gallery's size. The museum is - ambitiuosly - slated to open in 2015.

Carscadden Book Launch at Vancouver Special

Lovely people at Vancouver Special continue to host lovely events for us to attend, ogle the goodies at their store, drink beer and get educated. The first thursday of May (May 2nd), they are helping Bruce Carscadden Architect launch his book Thrift - a very unusual take on modern local practice. More info here.

Bruce Carscadden does a fair bit of work that is quite special and, yet, is under the radar - this is your chance to be introduced to it or to get to know it better. Maybe I'll see you there!

West Van home tour

This week West Vancouver Museum announced opening of registration for their annual and famous tour of West Vancouver west-coast modern houses. It is an annual must for many and there might just be some spaces still left on the tour.

There are two ways to enjoy this July 13th event - by bus and by own car. The price might be discouraging to some, but it is well-worth the money and time.

Barry Downs Exhibition - Catalogue Fundraiser

A fundraising event for a catalogue to accompany an upcoming exhibition of Barry Downs's work will take place next week at a Massey-Medal-winning design of the man himself. The beautifully situated house in West Vancouver has been since gracefully added to by another famed West Coast Architectural practice - Helliwell+Smith: Blue Sky Architecture.

It’s in the evening of April 11th, 6-9pm. The admission is $ 200 a person, and it sounds like a beautiful event. To register contact Kiriko Watanabe, assistant curator at West Vancouver Museum, at 604-925-7179 or at kwatanabe@westvancouver.ca

The exhibition of Barry Downs' work will take place in West Vancouver Museum from May 8 - June 15, 2013. The opening reception will be on May 7th, at 7pm. Fuller description here.

My fave building of 2012

I just voted on ArchDaily for my favourite educational building of the year and I hope that you go, check out the contenders and cast your vote for this awesome Vancouver project too - UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences building by joint venture firm of Montreal's Saucier + Perrotte and Vancouver's own HCMA.

Just finished and opened last year, it has generated a lot of buzz already - but how could it not? Just look at it:

It is - hands down - my favourite new Vancouver building and my favourite new Canadian building. Perhaps, a future classic; and certainly in Vancouver it joins a rather small elite group of buildings. Right now I can put it in my top five for this city.

Only a few days ago, it was announced that Wallpaper* magazine awarded it "Best Lab 2013" title.

Saucier + Perrotte and HCMA have teamed up for more buildings, unfortunately none in Vancouver. I hope they will. Meanwhile, vote here (apparently you can win an iPad if you do - like you need more incentive!).
